It happens all too often, you trip on an uneven sidewalk, fall down and brush it off. However, the next thing you know you are experiencing back pain or discover a hairline fracture in your ankle.
With slip and fall incidents, it is better to be safe than sorry. Here are the steps you should take after falling on someone else’s property.
1. Report the incident
If you fall on commercial or even private property, report the occurrence immediately. Ask the property manager for the appropriate protocol and follow it closely. Fill out any paperwork necessary and get the names and contact information of anyone who witnessed the accident.
2. See a physician
After a fall, it is always wise to seek medical attention, even if you believe your injuries to be minor. In many cases what feels minor immediately after an incident worsens in the days and weeks to come. When you see a doctor, be sure to let him or her know that you need care due to a slip and fall so that it can be properly documented in your chart.
3. Retain all relevant documents
When it comes to restitution for injuries incurred due to the negligence of others, retaining all relevant documentation is key. If you file an accident report with a business, request a copy immediately and keep it for potential later use.
While no one hopes that an injury will worsen with time, the reality is that they often do. Be prepared by hoping for the best and planning for the worst.
