The dangers of stairs for the elderly and tips to stay safe

Falls are the No. 1 one cause of injury and death for senior citizens in the United States. It's because every second of every day a senior citizen suffers a fall in one way or another. Falls can occur just about anywhere, but are most likely to occur in the home. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there were 29 million fall cases in 2014.

Seniors can take their safety into their own hands, especially at home, when it comes to suffering a fall. Preventing a fall is quite simple and can be done with a few adjustments to the home, if possible. One is to install a chair lift that carries the senior up the steps. There's also the possibility of installing a ramp or even an elevator for those who have the funds.

Seniors should always discuss their medications with their doctors. Find out which medicines are likely to cause drowsiness, or instability, which can lead to falls. If at all possible, have the medication switched to one that is less likely to cause a fall.

Seniors should have their eyes checked annually. If glasses need to be updated, this should also be performed. Having a clear line of vision makes it less likely for a senior to suffer a fall.

Seniors should also rid their homes of hazards that can cause falls, such as junk lying around on the floor, throw rugs, small furniture and much more.
